How to make random teams
- Type or paste the names into the entries box, one per line. You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.
- Set the Number of teams.
- Press Make teams. Each team is shown in its own color.
- Not happy? Press Make teams again to reshuffle.
Use the wheel when you need a single pick, such as a team captain, who chooses first or who presents next.
Where a random team picker helps
- Teachers: group work, lab partners, debate sides and quiz teams, with no complaints about picking favorites.
- Sports and PE: five-a-side football, basketball pickup games and relay races.
- Work: breakout rooms, hackathon teams and workshop tables that mix people from different departments.
- Game nights: trivia teams, Pictionary, charades and escape rooms.
Why random teams feel fairer
When captains pick teams, the same people tend to end up last, and friends cluster together. A random split takes the social pressure away. Anyone can check that the process is fair, and everyone accepts the result faster.
Frequently asked questions
How does the team generator split people?
It shuffles the names with a cryptographically secure random generator, then deals them out one at a time, like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.
What happens if the names don't divide evenly?
Some teams get one extra person. For example, 10 people in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.
How many teams can I make?
Anywhere from 2 to 50 teams, as long as there is at least one name per team.
Can I re-roll the teams?
Yes. Press "Make teams" again for a fresh random split. Each press is independent.
Are my names saved or uploaded?
Names are stored only in your own browser so they are still there next time. Nothing is sent to our servers.
